Our behavior is influenced by our perceptions of the behavior and attitudes of members of our social groups. Overestimating problem behaviors tends to increase participation in the behavior. Conversely, underestimating participation in healthy behaviors tends to influence us to engage in healthy behaviors less often. Research indicates that most people’s perceptions of their peers’ behaviors are often incorrect. Therefore, if we correct the misperceptions, we should see a decrease in problem behaviors.
