Guidelines for Using NHTSA Graphics and Media Assets

The following guidelines outline the appropriate use of material from the NHTSA website to promote traffic safety.

Traffic Safety Marketing Assets

The materials on TrafficSafetyMarketing.gov are NHTSA-produced assets that are provided for public use in promoting traffic safety. However, the right to use, distribute, or modify these assets is contingent upon the following format-specific guidelines:

  • Graphics: All graphics are provided for use in their original, unaltered form and are available via a "Download" button. No modifying, cropping, distorting, or creating derivative works based on these assets is permitted.
  • Text Documents and Social Media Posts: These are provided as editable templates to allow users to customize messaging for their specific needs. Please note that users assume all legal liability for ensuring that customized messaging complies with applicable state and local laws.
  • Videos, Public Service Announcements (PSAs), and Digital Ads: NHTSA-produced video, PSA, and digital ad content may not be edited, truncated, or altered in any way*. Unauthorized alteration of video assets may violate third-party intellectual property rights and result in legal liability for the user.
    • *Retagging: States and territories may request a retag from NHTSA to add a state-specific tag and logo to the end of the video.
  • Branding and Trademarks: The NHTSA logo and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) seal are protected federal marks (see 18 U.S.C. § 701; 49 C.F.R. Part 1). These marks may not be removed from downloaded materials and may not be added to non-NHTSA materials without express written authorization. Use of these materials does not constitute or imply an endorsement, sponsorship, or affiliation by NHTSA or DOT of any private entity or commercial product.

NHTSA Image Library

Images in the NHTSA Image Library are free to use for public safety outreach. External organizations may use these assets, provided the use is exclusively for promoting traffic safety initiatives and does not suggest government endorsement of a private entity or commercial gain.

Third-Party Content Notice

Materials on this site may contain content owned by third parties and used by NHTSA under licenses. Users are responsible for ensuring that their specific use complies with the original owners' requirements.

Logo Brand Guidelines

The NHTSA logo is for the official use of NHTSA. The NHTSA logo should not be combined with any other unapproved graphic or textual element, nor should it be used as a design element of any other unapproved logo or trademark. Rules and restrictions govern its use.
